Kyrgyzstan is a territory lying in what was once the central eastern part of the Soviet Union. The Kirghiz people came under the rule of the Russian Empire around 1860. Kyrgyzstan declared independence from the Soviet Union in August 1991. Islam is the chief religion; Kirghiz is the most popular language although Russian and Uzbek are also spoken.
